Dear @restaurantlocavore thank you for the best 7 amouse-bouche courses, plus 7 vegetarian tasting dishes, plus coconut flat bread, plus totally unique and stunning mixology pairing cocktails, plus a pre-desert, single dessert and post dessert I have ever had. That. Was. Incredible.

A page from David Foster Wallace's essay on "Authority and American Usage" from his book "Consider the Lobster". Which inspired and challenged me. What is a "Democratic Spirit"? Why do you we expect a DS to be innate to the citizens of said democracy? Is being a citizen of a democracy simply defined by being born of a country and being proud of it and its legacy and kicking up our heels on the hard fought, hard won freedoms of our predecessors and activists? Or is It a call to action? Is it an awakening, daily? A mindful practice in the meditation and participation in a massive countrywide experiment? It is a listening and a quiet patience supported by a fierce and passionate belief in the value of the rights of all human beings and members of the democracy (those hoping to gain entrance to, those born of, and those interacting with?) and why is this SO DIFFICULT TO LIVE UP TO? (Don't worry I'll totally post something soon like a beautiful sunset or a palm tree or something nice and a lot less... *insert description of whatever you felt about the above

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. (the hate speech is so loud these days in America. From both sides of the country and in both sides of the line. In the middle and north and south of it. Liberals and conservatives. We are all becoming more and more convinced and concretized in the belief that we are right and only we are right. That there is one way to move forward in this country. There is so much of me that is afraid to listen to another side of the story because so much of that story is steeped in hate. I cannot value hate. Why would I? Where does it lead? But I can value another's experience. I can listen and empathize with the suffering of others. As long as they (and I) speak with open hearts. Open minds. With the unified goal of caring for one another. All of us. Building this future for our children with love. That I can do. That is what we love people like #mlk for doing. That is what love does.)
